What about "Plan 9 From Outer Space"?

The Guardian newspaper and a panel of "scientific experts" have devised this list of the best ten sci-fi films ever. I would have put 2001 first, but Blade Runner is pretty good. I haven't seen Matrix, believe it or not, so I can't comment, but the FX are pretty stunning I imagine.

1. Blade Runner (1982) Dir: Ridley Scott
2. 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968) Dir: Stanley Kubrick
3. Star Wars (1977)/Empire Strikes Back (1980)
4. Alien (1979) Dir: Ridley Scott
5. Solaris (1972) Dir: Andrei Tarkovsky
6. Terminator (1984)/T2: Judgment day (1991) Dir: James Cameron
7. The Day the Earth Stood Still (1951) Dir: Robert Wise
8. War of the Worlds (1953) Dir: Byron Haskin
9. The Matrix (1999) Dir: Andy & Larry Wachowski
10. Close Encounters of the Third Kind (1977) Dir: Steven Spielberg

I havent seen the "the day the earth stood still" wil try to get a hold of that.
and the "war of the worlds" i have only seen the terrible remake series that was produced in the 80s. and they are awful, i shall try to see the original gangsta.

blade runner is a classy winner. sooooo futuristic...
2001 is more poetic and beautiful.

star wars kind of sucks. never been a fan of star wars. its a shame star trek I isnt on the list. i would have put that in number 3 instead of star wars.

I love lists.

I haven't seen all the Star Trek movies, but the second one, "The Wrath of Kahn" is pretty scary if I remember correctly. Especially when they hold people down and put those worms in their space helmets, that crawl up their nose and wrap themselves around their brain stem, which, natually, makes them go crazy. I had a nightmare about that once...

We all love lists, whether we admit it or not.

Anyway, what's wrong with Star Wars? I admit it is a bit cheesy (normally around the end) but the whole storyline is excellent, the effects are amazing for the time and the little plastic figures made me one happy little boy...until my brother sold them all.

don´t underestimate star trek.
the movies and the early tv-series should not be compared with the new tv-series, which are horrible sit-coms.
the first star trek movie is incredible, same class as 2001. for sure.

i never got the hang of star wars. just not seroius enough. too much hollywood.

Metropolis isnt on the top-ten list. Or isntt that considered a sci-fi classic?
What do I know? Anyone seen the Japanese remake of Metropolis? From the mid 90s i think....

I am wasting my time.

I'm not sure if Star Wars is David Bowie, but I do think it's very good. The thing a lot of people forget when they think about these films is that they are essentially for kids. That's why they have the Hollywood endings and cute little fury creatures and so on, so they can be compared to other sci-fi films for "adults", but you should cut them some slack. The spcae scenes are pretty amazing. Like B-man said, they are essentially just good old stories of good versus evil and even George Lucas described them as westerns set in space. Elton John, however, is shit. He is to rock what Lando Calrissian was to Jabba's palace.

If you had 1% of Elton Johns glasses you would be happy for the rest of your miserable life.
