schina

It's an interesting fact that when Chinese business people deal with Westeners, they change their names. This morning I met Charles from eh... China. I'm sure his mother didn't name him Charles and there's probably no sign for writing Charles in chinese. On the other hand, if his name had been Tsu-Li-Tsang I wouldn't have remembered it.

This made me wonder. Andy, do you have a cool Asian name to fit in? Like a translation of dragon-Andy or... blue-eyed-andy? Lau doesn't count eh.One more day before the weekend. tjoho!

Oh and Christian, I will come to your birthday party on the 17th! Any birthday wishes..?

Perhaps Chinese names have equivalents or something in English (like with Spanish/Cacalan have Jaime/Jaume like James, etc), so they (the Chinese people) use the equivalents for us stupid westerners. I remember Andy talking about people he'd met in China (girls, students, etc) and the names Kenny and Fanny stuck in my mind for some reason.

Thanks James, or should I say Judas.

Hi Rebecca. At least in Hong Kong, most people are given an "English Name" by their parents. If you don't have one, you'll probably name yourself in primary or secondary school. You then might keep it for the rest of your life or you might change it when you decide that "Rainbow" wasn't such a good choice after all.

People here still talk about "English names" but they're not really, they're non-Chinese names. I've got students with Spanish names - Jose and Carlos (both 6 years old), Japanese names - Tomoko, Keiko and there was one student last year with a German name - Adolf Hitler. He insisted on being addressed as Adolf Hitler and not just Adolf. There are a lot of young Rooneys and Owens and Ronaldos and Britneys and Tigers.

Then there are those who show a 60s rock star contempt for the conventions of naming. Stand up Apple, Kinky, Cat, Unique (she isn't - there are at least 2 that I know of), Sky and Ipod. I made up that last one but it wouldn't surprise me.

I don't have a Chinese name - if I did, I'd only get the tone wrong and call someone's mother a whore by accident.

And yes James, I'll keep you updated on the Fanny situation.

Missed the friday-pool but clocked in for the thrilling game on Saturday night at the ehm.. what was the name again, the stock bar? maybe it was the stock exchange bar, you pay a different price depending on what's going in the bar. We got vodka and orange for 4,50. good good. We also got asked to leave repeatedly but that's another story.
