Christmas, not so funny for this boy

This what happened to a friend of mine in Ireland, horrible story but please read. If you feel like giving money to a charity this Christmas, please keep him in mind.

Hello,

First of all, sorry about this being a mass mail out but I feel I have to do this for my own sanity at the very least. Secondly, sorry to anyone who has not heard from me in ages and if this appears to be out of the blue. A problem shared is a problem halved, so they say. So please read on...

On Tuesday 5th December between 2 and 3pm my apartment was broken into and almost €10,000 worth of my equipment was stolen. This included an Apple G4 Powerbook and a Canon XM2 professional video camera. These are the tools of my trade, as I am working freelance through my own recently set-up company with video and design. Also stolen was a brand new Trek bicycle, which I only purchased a week earlier, as well as other valuables. Needless to say, it was a big loss to me. None of it was insured which makes it a worse situation for my business and career. I have an outstanding loan of almost the same amount which I took out last year to pay off on my equipment.

My computer contained projects that I have being working on, both professionally and personally as well as records of my business. Some of it I had luckily backed up in September, but a huge amount of work is gone forever.

Some of you are already aware of the situation but most are not. It's a difficult time dealing with a major blow like this and I have kept a low profile for the past week because of this. Recounting the story to everyone I meet is hard enough. The Gardai inspected the apartment and checked for fingerprints, but admitted that there is practically no chance of recovering the items. It is sickening to think that these items may have been instantly sold to feed some addict's addiction, or possibly it may have been more organised and sold to someone who would know the value of such items.

The way this happened is almost beyond belief. I was working late on the Monday night and was awoken after 2pm on Tuesday to the sound of knocking at the door. This was quiet at first then gradually became louder and was followed by the sound of a big kick. I jumped up and ran down the stairs towards the door. As I did, I heard voices and people running from outside the door. I unlocked the chubb lock and noticed the side of the door was split from the force of the kick and the plate of the lock had come off. I looked around the hallway, but there was nobody around. So I closed the door behind me but didn't lock the chubb lock as it was damaged. I went downstairs to the common area to check the place out. I got talking to a neighbour about what had happened. We talked for about twenty minutes about the decline of the security of the building and of problems within it. He is living in the building for ten years while I am here for over four years. While we were there I noticed a male and female walk out the side entrance with what looked like my bicycle. I dismissed my instinct on this and returned to the apartment were I showed my neighbour the damaged door. It took a few minutes for me to realise that the apartment had been broken into while I was downstairs. I first noticed my bicycle was not in the room and then it got worse. I flipped out, seen my powerbook was missing from the office area and the place was trashed. I checked my bedroom and my video camera was gone and then the whole thing came down on me like a ton of bricks. |They had intent to get into the apartment at any cost and this was very worrying. I alerted the Gardai (who took three hours to arrive), the management company and my landlord. I also talked to my main client who I've been working on a major project for about the situation. His computers and other video equipment were in the apartment and luckily had not been taken. However, power supply units belonging to external drives and monitors were taken which has put a major spanner in the works with this project and others.

I would ask that if you keep you ears to the ground and if you know of anybody being offered any of this equipment under suspicious circumstances to be vigilant and let me know. This would include the like of ebay and buyandsell as well as on the street, in pubs etc. There is a strong possibility that the culprits may have been of eastern European origins.

Well I have decided enough is enough. I will have no choice but to move out. It’s a pity, as I really like my apartment and also living so close the the city with reasonable, by today's standards, rent. It means a lot of hassle and further expense of course, but I feel I have no choice. I ask too if you know of secure accommodation coming on the market, particularly a 2 bedroomed residence under €1200, to let me know.

I believe that the management company responsible for the building, KPM, has failed in its duty to me as a tenant to maintain adequate security in the building. There is no need to go in to details, anybody who has been in the building recently will know how bad it is got. I am currently seeking legal advice in respect of this matter. If anyone as tenants have had similar complaints with this company, I ask if they have made, or would they consider making a formal complaint.

Santa Claus! Check this out! Dont come dragging some old stinky dolls this year.
